Laboratory reorganization using the 5S method
One step closer to operational excellence
September 3, 2025
In recent months, our laboratory has undergone a profound transformation thanks to the implementation of the 5S method, an organizational approach based on the Japanese quality management model. This initiative, rigorously led by Christophe, Aline, Nicolas, Marion, Kevin, Jean-Noël, and Sandrine, required weeks of collective effort. Their commitment and efficiency deserve to be commended, as this reorganization marks a major step forward in our quest for performance and safety within our company.
But what exactly does 5S mean? It is a method of continuous improvement based on five fundamental principles whose Japanese names begin with the letter “S”:
- Seiri (Sort): Identify and get rid of anything unnecessary in the workspace.
- Seiton (Set in Order): Organize tools and equipment in a logical manner to facilitate access and use.
- Seiso (Shine): Keep the premises clean so that anomalies or malfunctions can be quickly identified.
- Seiketsu (Standardize): Establish rules and standards to perpetuate the first three steps.
- Shitsuke (Maintain): Encourage discipline to maintain good practices over time.
In our laboratory, this method was applied methodically and precisely. First, all existing furniture and equipment had to be sorted, inventoried, and cataloged. A complete map of the laboratory was then drawn up to redesign the layout of the spaces. One of the essential criteria for this new plan was compliance with safety standards, with clear traffic areas in front of each exit, allowing for rapid evacuation in case of emergency.
The laboratory is now structured around an optimized workflow, designed to facilitate the production of prototypes.
All equipment and tools are labeled and located precisely, which avoids wasted time and reduces the risk of errors.
The benefits of this reorganization are numerous:
- Time savings in daily tasks
- Reduced stress thanks to a better organization
- Improved safety for all employees
- Improved quality of work
- Stronger team commitment to a common goal
This project demonstrates our ongoing commitment to improvement, innovation, and working in a high-quality environment for the benefit of our customers and our teams.
We would like to congratulate Christophe, Aline, Nicolas, Marion, Kevin, Jean-Noël, and Sandrine for their professionalism, team spirit, and involvement in this great success. Thanks to them, our laboratory is entering a new era, one that is more efficient, cleaner, and better organized.
